Beneath the Battlements:
The Legacy of Fort Benoorden Spaarndam
GreenDreamCompany proudly led the development of an innovative heritage experience concept for Fort Benoorden Spaarndam. As the initiator and leader of the consortium, we developed a bold and sustainable plan that transforms the fort into a destination where heritage, nature, and storytelling converge. This concept includes a Heritage Hotel, an interactive museum, and a nature experience, designed to connect visitors with the rich history of the fort in a unique way.
At the heart of this storytelling experience was the narrative of the military commander historically connected to the fort. His story served as the guiding thread throughout the entire concept, shaping the visitor experience across all components.
Our Role and Expertise
We conducted not only an extensive feasibility study a stakeholder analysis and a masterplan. We also found an respected exploitant capable of realizing the project’s vision in exploitation fase. With a strong strategic approach, we submitted the proposal and secured second place—an achievement that affirms our concept as one of the most innovative and viable visions for the fort’s future.
What was our biggest challenge?
One of the key challenges in this project was gaining support from the local community. Residents were concerned about potential large-scale developments that could lead to excessive visitor numbers and increased traffic. To prevent delays due to objections and ensure a smooth project progression, it was crucial to engage the community, address their concerns, and involve them in shaping the outcome.
To achieve this, we applied our proprietary Inclusive Decision-Making Methodology, which focuses on finding the smallest voice—a circle dialogue built on diversity principles. This method ensures that all perspectives are heard, fostering genuine collaboration and co-creation. Rather than imposing a vision, we facilitated a dialogue where residents not only felt heard but also became active contributors to the final concept. This approach prevented lengthy opposition procedures and created a shared sense of ownership among stakeholders.
