From Forgotten Heritage to Living Landscape
Hoge Kempen National Park in Belgian Limburg is a unique natural area with a rich industrial past. Scattered across the park are former heritage buildings, now unused but still deeply rooted in the cultural and spatial identity of the region. GreenDreamCompany was commissioned to conduct a Quick Scan assessing the redevelopment potential of three such sites. The objective: to explore meaningful new uses with recreational or tourism value – in harmony with the ecological and narrative landscape of the park.
Our biggest challenge
To align the historical value of industrial heritage with the ecological sensitivity and experiential character of a protected natural area.
How can new recreational functions bring economic vitality while also offering space for new layers of meaning – without disturbing the delicate balance between nature, culture, and community?
Our approach
GreenDreamCompany applied its proven Quick Scan Method for Cultural Heritage Sites – an analytical tool built around eight key factors, including cultural-historical value, spatial integration, economic feasibility, and ecological impact.
Beyond technical and spatial analysis, we introduced storytelling as a design principle. By unlocking and translating the stories of the buildings, the landscape, and their industrial legacy, we created a narrative foundation for future redevelopment. This strengthens both visitor experience and the identity of the park.
Key outcomes
- Heritage valuation and spatial context analysis
In-depth assessment of the structural condition and cultural significance of the three buildings within the park’s landscape. - Scenario development and concept design
Exploration of potential future uses, including museums, immersive experiences, recreational stays, and event venues. With strategic advice on business models, target markets, and funding possibilities. - Stakeholder mapping and sustainability scan
Inventory of all involved stakeholders – including governments, heritage bodies, and tourism partners – and assessment of ecological impact. Sustainability principles were integrated throughout. - Narrative foundation for future use
Development of storylines linking each building to the park’s natural and cultural context. These narratives support thematic programming, educational initiatives, and visitor engagement.
Impact
This Quick Scan provided the park management and its partners with a clear strategic framework for the future of industrial heritage within a protected nature reserve. The study delivered practical insights for decision-making and helped strengthen the cultural-tourism profile of Hoge Kempen National Park – with respect for both history and ecology.
