Tides of Change: Navigating Sustainable Maritime Tourism in Cyangugu
On the Rwandan shores of Lake Kivu, near Cyangugu, a unique initiative is taking shape—one that brings together sustainable tourism, nature conservation, and local community development. This project spans two small islands and aims to create a balanced, responsible tourism experience while respecting the area’s natural beauty.
Visitors will be able to explore scenic walking trails, enjoy carefully integrated maritime activities, and experience the tranquility of nature. A small-scale golf course, requested by local authorities, will be designed to blend seamlessly into the landscape, enhancing rather than disrupting biodiversity.
The Challenge
While the natural setting holds great potential for tourism, the local community has little experience with hospitality. Many residents see visitors as a quick source of income, without realizing that poor service or aggressive selling can drive tourists away permanently. This short-term mindset risks damaging the region’s reputation, making it harder to attract visitors in the future.
The key challenge is building awareness and skills within the community—helping people see that respectful hospitality and sustainable practices are essential for long-term success. Through training and collaboration, the goal is to create a welcoming destination that benefits both people and nature.
This project is about more than infrastructure—it’s about creating a lasting tourism culture, where locals and visitors can thrive together. How can we ensure that tourism here is built on respect, sustainability, and long-term value? That is the real question.
