Bridging Borders, Enriching Journeys
Sustainable Tourism in the Transfrontier Peace Park
The Challenge
This project took place in a Transfrontier Peace Park, a unique cross-border nature reserve where conservation, tourism, and community development intersected. The challenge was to create a sustainable tourism model that stimulated economic growth without disrupting the ecological and cultural balance. The park faced both desired migration, such as free-roaming wildlife, and undesired migration, including poachers and illicit activities, which added to its complexity. Ensuring harmony between conservation efforts and human impact required a carefully considered approach.
The quick scan explored how leisure and tourism could contribute to conservation and economic opportunities, focusing on ecotourism, cultural experiences, and recreational infrastructure. This required strategic insights and innovative solutions that aligned with the park’s unique dynamics.
Leadership Hill: A Historic Landmark
Within this area lies Leadership Hill, a symbolic site where leadership and vision converge. It was here that Nelson Mandela received the order in recognition of his role in peace and reconciliation. A storyline has been developed around this location to emphasize the significance of leadership within the region. This site holds not only historical value but also the potential to become a unique tourist attraction and an inspirational landmark within the broader park concept.
